Swallowing Incoherence

For this group exhibition I made the installation Swallowing Incoherence. Inside the gallery sound was evoked but withheld in two silent 16mm films showing the percussionist Fritz Welch and the vocal artist Ruth Barker rehearsing. Their percussive gestures and mouthed shapes were translated and edited into the films as intertitles.

Small, circular mirrors, laid flush with the walls, reflected back the installation.

The silent 16mm films also exist as single screen works Fritz and Ruth.

Adaptation was a phased, year-long project with Collective which set out to commission works taking different forms over the year.

Film supported by Sophia Cameron. Installation supported by James McLardy.
