For this group exhibition I made the installation Swallowing Incoherence. Inside the gallery sound was evoked but withheld in two silent 16mm films showing the percussionist Fritz Welch and the vocal artist Ruth Barker rehearsing. Their percussive gestures and mouthed shapes were mistranslated and edited back into the films as intertitles.

The gallery’s windows were covered with dark UV vinyl to visually insulate the films. Small, circular mirrors, laid flush with the walls, reflected back the whole installation.

The silent 16mm films also exist as single screen works Fritz and Ruth.

Adaptation was a phased, year-long project with Collective which set out to commission works taking different forms over the year.

Film supported by Sophia Cameron. Installation supported by James McLardy.
